Beloved comedian and radio host Rickey Smiley debuts his first stand-up special in over a decade, exclusively on Hulu.
Rickey Smiley is making his highly anticipated return to stand-up comedy with Fool-ish, his first comedy special in more than ten years, set to premiere exclusively on Hulu on May 30, 2024. Known for his larger-than-life characters and quick-witted takes on life, pop culture, and faith, Smiley delivers a fresh hour of laughter and reflection—marking a new chapter in his storied career.
Rickey Smiley’s First Comedy Special Since 2011
Taped live at the historic Lyric Theater in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, Fool-ish brings Smiley’s signature humor to the stage after a decade-long hiatus. The special follows his 2011 release Open Casket Sharp, and is helmed by acclaimed filmmaker David E. Talbert (Baggage Claim, First Sunday) in his comedy directorial debut.
The special comes to Hulu after a competitive bidding war, underscoring the demand for Smiley’s return to the stand-up stage.
“I knew after over ten years I had to offer something that would satisfy my fans,” said Smiley. “I’ve been through a lot of transformation and trauma these past few years… We can find humor in so much of life. Fool-ish is for people of all ages, from those who grew up playing with Etch A Sketch to those who were raised on iPads.”
Behind the Scenes: A Team of Powerhouses
Fool-ish is executive produced by David E. Talbert and Lyn Sisson-Talbert for Golden Girl Inc., alongside Laura Lizer, Judi Marmel, Matt Beales, and John Bravakis. The special is expected to highlight Smiley’s unique ability to mix heartfelt storytelling with side-splitting comedy.
Rickey Smiley: More Than Just a Comedian
In addition to headlining the #1 nationally syndicated urban radio show, The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, Smiley has also served as host of BET’s Comic View and starred in the TV One reality series Rickey Smiley For Real. Broadcasting out of Atlanta for over 20 years, Smiley remains one of the most influential voices in urban media.
Smiley is also a published author. His 2023 memoir, Sideshow: Living with Loss and Moving Forward with Faith, touches on the tragic loss of his eldest son and his journey through grief and healing.
