REVIEW: Tyler Jordan Wesley Shines in Tour Production of ‘The Outsiders’

On November 25, I had the chance to experience the 2024 Tony Award winning musical The Outsiders during its stop at Atlanta’s iconic Fox Theatre, and it was nothing short of riveting. What unfolded onstage was a gritty, emotionally charged reimagining of S E Hinton’s classic story, elevated by a cast that understood the assignment and a production design that felt almost cinematic in its ambition.

Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, The Outsiders follows Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend Johnny Cade, and their tight knit Greaser family as they navigate violence, class divides, and the fragile search for belonging in a world that keeps trying to shut them out. The musical stays true to the soul of the beloved novel and Francis Ford Coppolas film, but directors Danya Taymor and the creative team inject it with a bold, contemporary pulse thanks to a gripping original score by Jamestown Revival and Justin Levine and choreography that never lets the tension settle.

A Production That Stuns Literally
The Fox Theatre stage has seen some breathtaking design work over the years, but The Outsiders pushes the bar even higher. The use of sunsets across the backdrop, lush, warm, and gorgeously saturated, felt like its own character, casting an emotional glow over every shift in the story. The technical design reaches its peak during the show’s jaw dropping water and fire sequences, each one executed with such precision and theatricality that the audience audibly gasped. These elemental moments do not just impress, they anchor the show’s themes of destruction, cleansing, and rebirth.

A Breakout Star: Tyler Jordan Wesley
While the ensemble overall is solid, the true standout of the evening is Tyler Jordan Wesley in the role of Dallas Winston. Traditionally portrayed by a white actor, Dallas emerges here with a fresh, commanding presence, an interpretation that deepens the character while challenging expectations. Wesley’s performance is electric, raw, and deeply felt, bringing new life to one of the story’s most complex figures.

Nolan White shines as Ponyboy Curtis, delivering both vulnerability and grit, while Bonale Fambrini’s Johnny Cade is heartbreakingly sincere. Travis Roy Rogers (Darrel Curtis) and Corbin Drew Ross (Sodapop Curtis) round out the Curtis family with compelling chemistry that drives the emotional core of the show.

At its heart, The Outsiders is still a story about friendship, family, and the aching desire to be seen. But on stage, and especially in this touring production, it becomes something bigger: a reminder that even when the world feels divided, there is still, as the musical beautifully asserts, “lots of good in the world.”

Entertainment Weekly said this show has the power to inspire a generation. After witnessing it firsthand, I can confidently say they are right.
