Furry Weekend Atlanta (FWA) isn’t just your typical convention. It’s a vibrant celebration of art, culture, and community, where enthusiasts of anthropomorphic characters come together to revel in their shared interests. But beyond the colorful costumes and lively festivities, FWA holds a deeper purpose — a commitment to making a positive impact in the world.
This year, FWA chose to support Lost-n-Found Youth, a nonprofit organization based in Atlanta that provides crucial services for young people experiencing homelessness, particularly those who identify as LGBTQ+. With more than 15,000 participants joining in the revelry over the event’s three-day weekend, FWA raised funds through ticket sales and planned events to aid Lost-n-Found Youth in their mission.
Melanea Alvarez, the Executive Director of Lost-n-Found Youth, shared insights into the organization’s vital work. “The youth we serve are between 18 and 25 years old, and many identify as LGBTQ+,” Alvarez explained. “Often, these young individuals find themselves without a home after coming out to their families and facing rejection or even expulsion from their own households.”
Lost-n-Found Youth offers a comprehensive 90-day program designed to provide temporary housing and essential life skills support, empowering these individuals to regain stability and independence. “We are the only nonprofit of its kind serving Metro Atlanta youth and beyond,” Alvarez emphasized, underscoring the critical role Lost-n-Found Youth plays in the community.
Grateful for FWA’s support, Alvarez expressed her appreciation for the organizers’ commitment to philanthropy. “To be this year’s designated nonprofit is truly an honor,” she remarked. “FWA’s decision to support Lost-n-Found Youth reflects our shared values of love and acceptance.”
Alvarez highlighted the challenges faced by young adults experiencing homelessness, particularly in a city where affordable housing remains a pressing issue. “The experience of homelessness is overwhelming, especially for those who may not have the financial stability or life skills necessary to navigate such adversity,” she noted.
Lost-n-Found Youth is currently gearing up for a capacity campaign and eventual capital campaign to expand their facilities and services. “We need more beds to accommodate the growing number of youth seeking our assistance,” Alvarez explained. With only 16 beds currently available, the organization recognizes the urgent need for expansion to meet the demand for their support services.
In addition to financial contributions, Lost-n-Found Youth welcomes donations of essential items and encourages community members to support their efforts through volunteering and patronizing their thrift store. “Every contribution, whether big or small, makes a meaningful difference in the lives of the youth we serve,” Alvarez emphasized.
As the conversation turned to broader social issues, Alvarez stressed the importance of fostering compassion and understanding towards individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly those within the LGBTQ+ community. “It’s critical to encourage kindness and acceptance, especially for young adults who have been marginalized and rejected by their own families,” she asserted.
In supporting Lost-n-Found Youth, FWA not only demonstrates its commitment to charitable causes but also exemplifies the spirit of inclusivity and compassion that defines the furry community. As attendees revel in the festivities and camaraderie of FWA, they also contribute to a brighter future for young people in need, embodying the transformative power of collective action and solidarity.
