Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump Hosts Inaugural Social Justice Weekend In Atlanta

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump will host the inaugural social justice weekend in Atlanta, GA from Friday, December 13 through Sunday, December 15th.

Three celebrity-driven events will raise money to provide scholarships for five future civil rights and social justice students, currently pursuing law degrees at historical black universities.  Crump chose the second week of December to coincide with the celebration bowl and highlights of HBCUs in the city during the weekend.

Focusing on education a month after President-elect Donald Trump announced major cuts in education, specifically pertaining to black and brown students sends an intentional message of hope for communities discouraged by the rhetoric being shared since November 6th. “If there was ever a time for our communities to unite in support of education it’s now. It’s important that young people feel supported and we create opportunities for them to continue to thrive. It was imperative for us to end this year empowering our community and taking a stand for the future. We are beginning with this weekend in Atlanta, but there is more to come,” Crump says.

Affectionately referred to as Black America’s Attorney General, Crump was listed among the most influential people of 2021 by Time magazine. Ebony Magazine touted Crump as one of the 100 Most Influential African Americans and he is unarguably one of the nations foremost legal minds and advocates for social justice.  Crump’s recent documentary ‘Civil’ was nominated for an Emmy in the category of social issue documentaries. Hosting the weekend in Atlanta, a location recognized as America’s birthplace of civil rights was important for the inaugural weekend. Crump believes Atlanta presents the perfect backdrop for Crump’s celebratory ‘party with a purpose’ weekend lineup.

The weekend begins on Friday, December 13th with Jokes For Justice’, an evening of comedy featuring comedians Steven Brown, J Smiles and Marvin Dixon at Park Tavern, located at 500 10th St NE, Atlanta, Ga 30309. On Saturday, December 14th, Crump will host The Social Justice Day party along with several celebrity surprise guests. The day party is being held at Opium, 900 Brady Ave NW, Atlanta, GA 30318. The weekend will close with a formal invite-only Social Justice Honors Brunch at the Piedmont Room at Park Tavern nestled in Atlanta’s beautiful landmark, Piedmont Park.

The Social Justice Honors Brunch will honor the following influential political, social and community leaders; Michelle Taylor Jones, (Corporate Trailblazer), Congresswoman Nikema Williams (Public Service) Don Lemon (Media Icon), singer/actor Tyrese Gibson (Cultural Influencer), Jaleia Latson (Rising Star), Tezlyn Figaro (Champion of Social Justice) Rev. Dr. Jamal Bryant (Faith Based Activism)

The Ben Crump Social Justice Benefit weekend is powered by Insights Marketing. CEO Keshia Walker is an HBCU graduate and agrees with Crump’s stance on supporting students. “We are intentional with our projects and events that Insights hosts and supports. As a FAMU graduate I understand the importance of an education that allows our students to feel supported and empowered. The majority of our work over the last 20 years has allowed us to contribute and provide scholarships for deserving students. We know moving forward, our students will require even more support from us as a collective. This benefit weekend allows us to end the year making a stand for education,” Walker says
